Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam in Turkey

Students who want to pursue graduate studies in Turkey are required to sit for an exam known as “Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam, or ALES”. This exam is organized and managed by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). Some of the universities in Turkey require ALES scores for admittance into the master and doctoral degree programmes. 

The ALES exam has 2 parts: 

Linguistic/Verbal: This part has two sections:
  • Linguistic-1
  • Linguistic-2
Mathematical/Numerical: This part has two sections:
  • Mathematics-1
  • Mathematics-2
Total no. of questions: Each section comprises of 50 questions, thus a total of 200 questions.

Duration of ALES exam: 3 hours (180 minutes)

ALES exam dates: ALES exam is held two times in a year in March and November. Also, universities in Turkey accept students for master and doctoral degree programmes twice in a year.

Minimum score required: 55; GMAT or GRE are substitute of ALES exam.

Eligibility Criteria

Following students can apply for the ALES exam:
  • Students who wish to study master's and doctorate degree in Turkey must take the ALES exam.
  • Turkish nationals who wish to go abroad for master and doctorate degree abroad sponsored by Turkish state

ALES Exam Evaluation

The ALES exam is evaluated in three ways:
  • Equally-Weighted: This method is for master and doctoral degree programmes at all departments of Economic and Administrative Sciences and some specialties of Education faculties.
  • Mathematical: This method is for master and doctoral degree programmes at the departments/divisions that have more mathematical subjects as Architecture, Science and Engineering.
  • Linguistic: This method is for master and doctoral degree programmes at the departments/divisions that focus on humanitarian topics as Law, language, Geography and history, and literature.

Applying Ways and Means

Candidates must apply for the ALES exam electronically. Visit the official website of OSYM to apply. In order to complete the application procedure, candidates must pay the required fees.

Results

Results are published on the official website of the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM).
Scoring: 4 incorrect answers remove 1 right answer.
Validity: The ALES scores are valid for a period of 3 years.
